What is blogging, and can you make money from it?

Author: Sally Jones

Blogging has been a worldwide phenomenom for many years now. Its the “in thing” for many businesses and marketing experts to showcase themselves online. But blogging is not just for internet marketing gurus and businesses, thanks to free online blogging sites such as WordPress.com and Blogger.com, blogging is now for everyone.

Blogging is considered a science by some people, and according to one leading internet marketing expert, blogging helps promote analytical and critical thinking.

Well written blogs are full of rich and fresh content, promoting both helpful disscussion and criticism. Instead of creating a closed and exclusive online community, such as the old style membership websites which were popular a few years back, these blogs enhance discussion and interaction among other blogs and internet users.

Blogging promotes free speech, freedom to discuss issues on a level playing field with like minded people. The information you can get from blogs is first hand and real time, and in many cases, its information that you cannot get anywhere else. Aside from that, you are always free to comment on what is written. Constructive and destructive criticisms are what make the internet a great place to learn, and do business.

Blogging also also a great place for marketers to grow their online reputation, by taking part in popular discussions and posting links to their own blogs and content. Unlike articles, blogs need not be too serious or too technical. You can get a glimse of the bloggers personality, which helps you relate to the content and products which they are promoting.

To keep their subscribers satisfied, blogs need to be updated regularly. This constant demand for output encourages a kind of spontaneity and ‘raw thinking’. In simple terms, this is the brief associations and the occasional strange ideas that are rarely found other formal types of media.

Blogging fosters spontaneity since blogging updates can be posted in a matter of clicks whenever a new idea or interesting information is found. Blogging is perfectly suited to follow the plan for promoting creativity.

Today, blogging has been given a boost by social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Many people dont realise it, but they are both micro blogging sites in their own way, they have the same basic principles as blogging. You post content, and people discuss it and share it with the world. If you write a good, catchy blog post that is of interest to people, it can be tweeted to tens of thousands of peolple within seconds of the blog post been published. Thats why blogging is considered to be one the most powerful forms of media in the world.

Whatever your niche or interest, start blogging today and position yourself as a leader in your field. Whether it be fishing, cycling, making money, computers or horse riding. If you have an interest, share it with the world and become famous in your niche. You too can soon be making money, by sharing your thoughts with the world.

I’ve been looking at different blogs and there are so many different styles it is hard to say what the basics for a good blog is. I suspect that as with anything else in life; those that aren’t looking to be “it” are. But on your opinion what are the basic features a blog needs to have in order to catch and keep your attention?

Actually my blog name is not relevant to my blog niche..in this time i want to convert my blog to a website through blogger
but i dont know if i will do it ,then how much will affect my blog traffic?

  3. psi says:

Lots, having the right name will get you lot of traffic. Would you ever enter a shop named ‘Shoe shine’ to buy flower? No right, because the name ‘shoe shine’ makes you think of shoe’s not flower.
Similarly, if your blog name is not relevant to your niche, it wont strike up in mind of many serious visitors, and you will lose out on a large chunk of traffic.

My suggestion, definitely do convert your blog name to something more relevant, that fits in with your niche. That way
    1. new users searching for your niche on search engines, are more likely to come across you.
    2. you blog will sound more professional and serious
    3. Your blog can achieve better page rank on Google
    4. You can earn more revenue from your blog, as you will get more visitors
    5. It will add a fresh appeal to your blog.

Make sure you inform your current followers, in advance that you are going to change your blog name. Better still you can run a contest/ ask suggestion from your current followers for what the new name should be. that will be lot more fun for everybody involved.

The key to a large following is to have great content.
I also have a blog but keep it anonymous and my friends don’t know I have the blog. The only people that know about it are those that receive parts of my project. Other ways to promote your blog:

    1) Visit other blogs that have the same sort of topic, in your case, photography and posting a comment on it with a link to your own blog.

    2) Be a guest blogger on other larger photography blogs. If your content is great there, you’ll be followed by others.

    3) You can subscribe to RSS feed directories. These put your RSS feed into a directory that people can refer to when looking for something related to your topic.

I recently started a blog, and I was just wondering how people have promoted their blogs online to get more followers so you aren’t just typing to nothing out in the internet?
Oh, and for my blog, I don’t really want my friends to be my followers, unless they find it on their own. My blog is about something that most of my friend’s can’t really help me with. (Photography is the main subject)

Your followers cannot see your more personal blog, unless you have promoted it on your fun blog.

    Have fun!

I made a more personal blog and I don’t want followers of my fun blog that don’t know me to see what I put on it. Can they see everything I post or just the posts for my fun blog?

  8. BizzyB says:

First, I think it needs a great design above the fold, the area you see without scrolling down. This would include some kind of catchy logo and/or header. Also, a clean appeal to it with organized content. If a visitor is confused about where to go in the first 3 seconds, they will leave your site. Another thing to add is catchy headlines for your post. Whenever I read blogs, I tend to gravitate towards those who spark my curiosity and a catchy headline can do this.

You are right, there are many elements to a blog that will keep your attention. So many factors are involved like your niche, what you are offering, the layout, etc.

I have a blog that’s private, so no one else sees it, but I still want to make it look nice. How can I personalize my blog without fucking it all up?

  10. Ilee'yahKukla says:

whereever you are hosting your blog, try keeping it readable and not just drop images that you like all around the background. Personalize it in the header, where the title is. Don’t touch the reading areas.

  14. Paul says:

Blogs are like online diaries, but they have become so popular that cyberspace is now called the blogosphere. People don’t exchange links anymore, they just leave their links on each others blogs. Blog is short for weblog. It’s a log of what a person says, promotes or communicates online. It unfolds in chronological order, by date. Search engines love blogs more than conventional websites, because they are updated on an hourly, daily or weekly basis. Search engines are programmed to scan blogs for activity and unique content periodically; at least once a day. But if you post a lot, the search engines become wise and scan you blog more frequently. If you would like to learn to make money, come to my blog and read my daily posts. If you have any questions, just ask. I read my comments everyday. I will help you make money, with blogs, affiliate products, adsense and social networks for free :)

I am about to start a blog. Along with many other hopeful’s, I hope to eventually make money off it. I noticed a lot of sites do not allow you to make money of google ad sense and things like that. What are some sites I can start my blog on that will allow this since it seems to be the most profitable way to make money off a blog?

  16. says:

    I recommend and personally use:
    http://www.hostmonsterplus.com

They allow me to put any legal content on my website that I want, including advertisements.

They have unlimited space and transfer.
They give you a free domain for life.
1 click installers for different blogging softwares (and other software), with step by step walkthroughs to setup your blog how you want.
They have php and mysql – Which you will need for a blog.
You can also add as many domains (.com, .net, …) as you like so you can have many different sites for 1 hosting price.
They also give you free $50 Google Advertising Credits for advertising your site.

I’ve been using them very happily for about 4 years now.

If you go with them and have any trouble making your site feel free to PM me, I have a lot of experience there.

Whatever you choose, the best luck to you.

I own several blogs, how to import all the blog posts from one to another? And after imported, is the posts still avalible in the first blog site?

  18. JakeB says:

If you have RSS enabled, you can pull in via the feed. If you are using WordPress or Blogger, they provide you with the ability to export your entire blog in a standard format to import.

I think Blogspot (http://www.blogspot.com) is a great blogging website. I use it, and blog all the time. I have a cool design, and extra pages! Yes, it allows you to add extra pages, or under navigation bar have a page and when they click, it goes to an external link such as your twitter, or facebook.

Find an external layout to add to your blog if they don’t have one that interests you. http://www.createblog.com/blogger-layouts/
